Homemade Blackberry Jam

Late summer is a wonderful time for blackberries. Across the UK, these beautiful dark berries can be found growing abundantly along hedgerows, country paths and woodland edges.

There is something special about going for a walk, picking a handful of ripe blackberries and bringing them home to turn into a delicious homemade treat.

This homemade blackberry jam is simple, full of fruit and made with less sugar than many traditional jam recipes. It is a lovely way to enjoy one of the most delicious fruits of the season.

Why Make Blackberry Jam at Home?

Blackberries have a naturally sweet yet slightly tart flavour, making them perfect for homemade jam.

They are also naturally rich in vitamin C, fibre and plant compounds called anthocyanins, which give blackberries their beautiful deep purple colour.

Of course, jam contains added sugar, so it is best enjoyed in moderation. Using ripe, naturally sweet blackberries allows us to create a delicious homemade spread without using excessive amounts of sugar.

Homemade Blackberry Jam Recipe

Ingredients

  • 500 g fresh ripe blackberries

  • 180–200 g sugar

  • Juice of ½ lemon

  • 2 tablespoons water

Method

Gently wash the blackberries and allow them to drain well.

Place the blackberries in a saucepan with the water and lemon juice.

Cook over medium heat for approximately 5 minutes, until the berries begin to soften and release their natural juices.

Add the sugar and stir gently.

Reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

As the blackberries cook, gently crush some of them with a wooden spoon.

You do not need to completely purée the fruit. Leaving a few pieces of blackberry gives the jam a beautiful homemade texture.

How Do You Know When the Jam Is Ready?

Before you start cooking, place a small plate in the refrigerator.

When the jam begins to thicken, place a teaspoon of it onto the cold plate and leave it for a few seconds.

Tilt the plate gently.

If the jam moves slowly and has a thick, spreadable consistency, it is ready.

Remember that it will become slightly thicker as it cools.

Delicious Ways to Enjoy Blackberry Jam

Homemade blackberry jam is wonderful served with:

  • Fresh bread or toast

  • Natural or Greek yoghurt

  • Porridge or overnight oats

  • Pancakes

  • Fresh cheese

  • Homemade cakes and desserts

A spoonful of blackberry jam with Greek yoghurt and oats can also add a lovely seasonal touch to breakfast.

Picking Wild Blackberries

If you are lucky enough to live somewhere where wild blackberries grow, late summer can be the perfect time to pick them.

Choose berries that are fully ripe, dark and plump, and only pick fruit that you can confidently identify.

Avoid berries growing very close to busy roads or in areas that may have been sprayed with chemicals.

Once you get home, carefully sort through the berries, remove any leaves or debris and wash them thoroughly before using them.

A Little Taste of Summer in a Jar

Making homemade jam is one of those simple traditions worth keeping alive.

Seasonal fruit, a saucepan and just a few basic ingredients can create something truly delicious.

And perhaps that is one of the loveliest things about homemade food: taking what nature gives us each season and turning simple ingredients into something worth sharing.
