How to Prevent Obesity: Small Habits to Care for Your Health

How to Prevent Obesity: Small Habits to Care for Your Health (obesity)
Looking after your weight begins with looking after your health. It does not require a perfect diet or counting every mouthful. What matters is building habits you can maintain, while respecting your body, your age and your circumstances.
A balanced diet and regular movement can help reduce the risk of obesity. However, they cannot guarantee prevention: genetics, health conditions, certain medicines and our surroundings also influence weight. Obesity is a complex disease, not a lack of willpower.
1. Add Variety to Your Meals (Obesity)
A healthy diet can include vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, whole grains and different sources of protein. Eating a variety of foods helps provide the nutrients your body needs.
Try adding vegetables to rice, including beans in a salad or serving vegetable soup alongside a meal. These are simple ways to bring more variety to your everyday eating.
Healthy eating does not have to be expensive. Frozen vegetables and tinned pulses can make preparing meals easier and more affordable.
2. Pay Attention to What You Drink
Fizzy drinks, sweetened drinks and coffees with added sugar also contribute to your daily energy intake. Too much sugar can contribute to weight gain.
Try choosing water more often and gradually reducing the sugar you add to drinks. You do not need to change everything overnight.
3. Create a Routine That Works for You
Planning a few meals can make food choices easier when you are busy or hungry.
You could start with simple habits such as:
Writing a shopping list before going to the supermarket.
Preparing enough soup for several meals.
Freezing portions of home-cooked food.
Keeping convenient options available, such as fruit or plain yoghurt.
The aim is to make everyday life easier. A routine that demands too much is difficult to maintain.
4. Make Movement Part of Your Day
Walking, dancing, cycling and swimming are ways to become more active. A general recommendation for adults is at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, with activity adapted to individual abilities.
If you are starting out, begin with short sessions and build up gradually. A walk can be a manageable first step. Choose something you enjoy so that movement becomes a regular part of your life.
5. Care for Your Sleep and Emotional Wellbeing
Sleep is part of the everyday habits that support weight management, alongside food choices and physical activity.
Make time to rest and notice how you feel. If eating has become a frequent way of coping with sadness, anxiety or loneliness, seek support without blaming yourself. You deserve to be listened to and supported.
6. Ask for Support When You Need It
If you are concerned about your weight or notice persistent changes, speak to your GP. An assessment can help identify contributing factors and suitable support.
For people already living with obesity, care may include nutritional advice, psychological support, medicines or other treatments, depending on their needs.
Especially as we grow older, caring for our health should consider nutrition, strength, mobility and wellbeing—not just the number on the scales.
Start with One Manageable Change
Choose one action for this week: prepare more meals at home, drink fewer sugary drinks or set aside a few minutes for a walk.
You do not need to do everything at once. Look for habits you can repeat and ask for help when you need it.
Your body deserves care, respect and patience at every stage of life.
